Synopsis:

Jean Dufy (1888-1964) lived in, and understood, many a “land”. Lands which made reality mirthful or nostalgic, musical or decorative. He travelled: from childhood memories to his adolescence in Le Havre, from bustling modern Paris and its avant-garde, to the serene Vosges mountains, the silent plateaus in Limousin and Touraine, from the blindingly blue Mediterranean Sea, to the fantasies of the circus folk he frequented so avidly. These “lands” create an array of silhouettes, superimposed or juxtaposed outlines. They stand out through colour, not shadows. Among all these different lands we shall focus on the seascapes. They convey all of a man’s life, a painter’s life, his gaze sculpted by the pictorial influences of both Matisse and Cézanne. A revelation.
